Welcome to March’s Compass Points

Evolving and learning

Rachel Bundock, compass Chief Executive Officer
Rachel Bundock, Compass Chief Executive Officer

Welcome to a wonderful spring edition. With the clocks going forward, it feels like the lighter nights and brighter days are finally on their way. This in itself is something to celebrate after what feels like a long rainy and damp winter. This month’s edition focuses on many new things for Compass – the launch of our refreshed volunteering programme ‘Compass Together’, new welcome packs for CYP in our Derby Changing Lives service whilst they wait to access support, Positive Effect delivering We Care training to seafarers in Croatia, the ambitions of one of our EDI thematic group chairs in how our new groups can help us to develop a learning culture across Compass. What underpins all these things is a constant desire to help more people and to never stop evolving, learning and developing as an organisation.

Heartfelt thanks

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to Lisa Gale, who will take early retirement after 24 years of dedicated service to Compass. There aren’t enough words to describe how important and valued Lisa is to Compass. Fondly known for her impeccable organisational skills and post it notes, she has been one of Compass’ true champions and ambassadors. Her loyalty, hard work and dedication to delivering high quality care to CYP has always been her driver. Having been a part of mine and Compass’ journey over so many years, she will be very much missed. On behalf of SLT and the Board, I would like to thank her from the bottom of our hearts for all that she has done and achieved. Compass will not be quite the same without her.

Fulfilling our potential

England rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson with Compass’ Rachel Bundock and Jan Smith.

Finally, as a member of the National Leaders Council, Jan Smith and I attended an evening event held at the London Mayor’s Mansion House, with guest speaker Jonny Wilkinson.

Jonny, famous for leading the England rugby team to World Cup glory in 2003, presented Mindset – Unearthing self-worth beyond achievements.

Jonny reflected upon his own journey, both on and off the rugby pitch, and coming to the realisation that true fulfilment exists in a completely different dimension to trophies, recognition, success and achievement. And that he let these things, all determined by how he fared in comparison and competition with others, define who he was. To the point where it completely dictated his life, leaving him in a constant state of survival mode and living in fear of failure and rejection.  His lesson was that he was so fixated on the goals he set around his rugby career, that he lost sight of what was important to him or what mattered most – his health and wellbeing and a true sense of fulfilment.

What Jonny’s story made me reflect on was that whilst goals are important as they give us something to work towards, they don’t automatically make us happy or fulfilled when we achieve them in isolation.

I was reminded of our work with children and young people in promoting wellbeing – realising our goals, is not the same, as realising our potential. Fulfilment is not about a destination or even a journey but about the boundless possibilities of what makes us happy; and that is a perspective that can be liberating and magical.

Compass Together volunteer with us

Compass Together is about staff working alongside our volunteers

We’re launching Compass Together, our renewed approach to developing and supporting communities, using the combined experience and knowledge of volunteers working with staff.

There are new volunteering pages on our website, with a link for people to enquire, making it easy to sign up. And we have new resources and tools to encourage volunteering, including posters for the office and social media slides. See useful tools here P:\People\Related documents\Volunteering

Rachel Bundock, Compass CEO, stressed that no volunteer roles would replace any jobs – they are to enrich our offer to CYPF, provide a variety of workplace opportunities for volunteers and enhance experiences for paid staff.

Compass Together is launching with three quite wide-ranging volunteer roles that are already on Eploy, our recruitment portal.

Rachel said: “Compass Together is about bringing together both our paid staff and volunteers to work as one team.

“Volunteers work shoulder to shoulder, side by side with paid members of staff because we recognise the real value and importance that volunteers have on the work that we’re trying to do, because, in essence, together we are trying to achieve a shared, common goal.

“For the admin support role, people will have a real diversity of professional experience and knowledge, and those skills are important for us.

“But also, volunteers live within their community. They have a really rich understanding of lives in that community and what the everyday issues are that the communities face.”

She said: “Having volunteers able to bring those insights helps us to bridge that gap and make sure that what we do actually is really bespoke to that local community.

“People really understand that what makes Compass so special is the values that we hold dear, and that’s ultimately about how we treat people and how we care for people. And I think that really resonates for all of our staff in all of our teams, in our service and our central teams.

“You know, fundamentally people know that it’s a people organization and they are working with a group of people that are trying to achieve the real same mission.”

The Volunteering Framework outlines our commitment to volunteers and the benefits we hope people will gain from volunteering with us.

It also includes our new Compass Together Charter, based on our mission, vision and values. As it’s all new, we’ve made a visual Recruiting Volunteers quick guide document showing the process from first enquiry to recruitment. Find all the new information here.

Compass Together approach

Our approach to developing and supporting a community of volunteers and staff. Respecting equally the skills, knowledge, and experience of paid and non-paid colleagues in one workforce.

With our stated Values and Mission in mind, we work for Compass, together.

Our volunteering aims

Compass Together aims to:

  • Engage with school-aged children, young people, young adults, parents / carers, families, and local communities.
  • Be inclusive and representative of the communities and people we serve, including those who can contribute expertise by experience.
  • Increase opportunities for people living in the communities we serve to build the skills and confidence for self-help and helping others.
  • Invest time and support to volunteers in gaining valuable life and work skills.
  • Learn from, and participate in volunteer networks and partnerships to deliver real added value from our volunteering roles.
  • Be creative and bold in the ongoing development of our volunteering opportunities, technical expertise and knowledge.

As it’s all new and we want to make volunteering as accessible as possible, we’ve made a visual Recruiting Volunteers quick guide sheet showing the process from first enquiry to recruitment.

You can see an updated Compass Non-paid roles policy and procedure.

Communicating the Compass Together offer

Rachel added: “It’s important to talk about this, too. We hope staff will have conversations in the community about Compass Together – how we want to increase our social impact and enrich lives through providing opportunities for volunteering.”

If you have any questions please get in touch with Operations Director Jan Smith who will provide an operational steer through the implementation stages.

Volunteer stories –

Members of the Volunteer Steering Group have been recalling how volunteering has impacted their lives.

Rachel Bundock, Chief Executive

What did you volunteer as? – Volunteer listener on a drugs and alcohol helpline in Leicester. Answered calls at night from adults who were struggling with drugs or alcohol and wanted help.

Best bits? – Having a mentor who guided through my early days of learning, particularly in managing emotionally distressing calls. Being there for someone in that moment when they needed someone to listen.

Worst bits? – Listening to people’s stories and how lonely they felt with no one to turn to when they needed support. Being limited to what I could do to help other than give people my time, listening ear and compassion.

How did it help you in your personal development/career. Or a lasting impression? – I used the experience as a stepping stone to undertake a qualification in drug & alcohol counselling with Leicester University. The course required me to do a work placement which I did at the local young offenders institute. Compass then won the contract to deliver the substance misuse service in the YOI, I applied and got the job.

Sarah Walton, PA to Senior Operations Management

What did you volunteer as? – Young Persons Mentor at YorkMind for three years

Sarah

Best bits? – Helping young people make small changes that make big improvements in their lives.

Worst bits? – As a mentor you don’t always get to know how the young person gets on in the world, when your time together ends, but you send your hope along with them.

  • How did it help you in your personal development/career. Or a lasting impression?

My knowledge and understanding of issues young people face has grown. Overall volunteering has made me a better communicator, listener and more solution focussed.

We want to hear about your own volunteer stories. Can you answer the same questions Rachel and Sarah did? Send it to us by email at Compass Points. Preferably with your head and shoulders picture, too.

Compass pay awards a reward for staff’s efforts

Compass has announced a four percent pay rise for eligible staff, with performance related pay top-ups of a further 2.22 to 4.22 per cent.

The pay award came in on 1st April.

Kim Jones, People Director, said: “These significant pay uplift amounts reflect our desire to reward staff well. On behalf of the Senior Leadership Team, I would like to sincerely thank all staff for their continued efforts.

“As in past years, our market adjustment is calculated taking into account salaries being offered in similar roles externally and the contract income we receive to fund any pay increases.

“In addition to the 4% uplift and the PRP, all staff on salary band E will get an extra £1500 to account for external market pressures in recruiting to these particular roles.”

Meanwhile, eligible staff already at the top of their pay band will get an extra £750 (Highly Effective appraisal rating) and £1000 (Exceptional appraisal rating) will apply in place of the PRP percentages.

10.1 percent increase already implemented for Band B staff

And Kim said: “People in Band B roles have already received their market adjustment ahead of the 1st April 2024 pay award date. We were keen to implement a 10.1% increase effective from 1st October 2023– this is due to our commitment to pay in line with the real living wage increase.”

Performance Related Pay

PRP pay award percentages explained.

Appraisal Rating% Pay Uplift
Exceptional4.22%
Highly Effective3.22%
Competent2.22%
Improver0%

Letters confirming pay awards will be issued in late April and both PRP and market adjustments are effective from 1st April.

Kim said: “Our desire to reward well is linked to our ambition of being employer of choice in our sector, whilst ensuring we are achieving affordable delivery across our services.

“Whilst compensation and benefits is an important area for employer of choice, it is not the only area we consider. Our organisational action plan, in response to the staff survey results, to be shared shortly will set out the other areas we are working on in this ambition.

And Kim added: “Benchmarking our compensation and benefits is completed regularly where we review information from the external health and social care market.

“Within the external review, we also take account of certain employers where we compete most closely – our intention here is not to try to duplicate what they do (as this is not always necessary or appropriate given our size, approach etc) but to keep track of their terms and consider if any changes are needed to the Compass offer.”

Any questions?

Should you have any questions after reviewing your individual pay award letter and the FAQ document, please direct them to your line manager in the first instance.

In general terms, “Eligible staff” are those who have joined Compass before 1st October 2023 and/or have not had a pay increase on or after 1st October 2023 and are not in a trainee role. There are other factors that we take into account to determine eligibility for a pay award and these are detailed in the FAQ document.

For more information on pay awards including our eligibility criteria to check if you are in scope for a pay award on 1st April 2024, please refer to our frequently asked questions document here FAQs 1st April 2024 v2.0 Final.pdf.

Individual questions

Should you have any questions after reviewing your individual pay award letter and the FAQ document, please direct them to your line manager in the first instance. Following this, if you need to contact the People Team about a query, please email the HR inbox.

EDI update

LGBTQ+ thematic group leader Harry tells us about his mission to support

Harry Dixon
Harry

Harry Dixon, Education Mental Health Practitioner – EMHP, Compass GO… North East Lincolnshire Mental Health Support Teams

Compass Points: Hi Harry – Why did you feel you wanted to lead Compass’ LGBTQ+ thematic group – what inspires or drives you to do so? –

Harry Dixon: Hi – Leading a group is not a typical nor comfortable move for me usually, but I had been having discussions with some of the great management at Compass since last summer about how I would love there to be a safe space created for team members compass-wide to learn more about specific EDI themes, share best practice, and make positive change in our respective areas, so I felt that now would be the time to challenge myself in something I have been vocal about in the past.

CP – What do you want to achieve for Compass’s culture?

HD – I would like the EDI thematic groups to create a culture of learning amongst our different teams where we are able to share best practice, common challenges, and use our unique personal experiences, that already inform our every day clinical practice, to help support wider communities through the support of our incredible teams nationwide, which will hopefully then greater support our service users.

CP – What do you want to achieve, through the group’s work, for our offer to CYPF?

I would like CYP and their families to know that we are here to learn about their individual needs and to support them, as well as making an honest pledge to continue learning and developing our skills in areas of knowledge that they are the experts in, so that we can become more adaptable and person-centred.

CP – Thanks, Harry!

Just Say Thanks…

Thank You

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to the whole of Birmingham MHST for all of your well-wishes.  I will be leaving on 15th March for a new adventure, but ever since the beginning of the Service Launch you have all been so lovely, welcoming and helpful in times where I’ve felt not quite myself.  I feel like I’m leaving my second family behind to fly the nest to pastures new.  You’ve all been a huge presence in my journey, and each of you in your own way have helped me into being reintegrated back into full-time office working, becoming the person that I am today, and also working through my own health and wellbeing challenges with more confidence.

Special mentions go to Arlene Lespeare, Fiyaz Nazir, Vishal Pilli, Arjan Bains, Sue Berry and the Birmingham Leadership Team for being a brilliant and hardworking team, and for being supportive and offering guidance and comfort where I needed it most.  Honourable mentions go to Clare Hitchen and Emma Preston for being amazing people to work with and always putting a smile on my face with their correspondence. 😊

I will miss you all greatly, but you may see me again down the road someday!

All the best to you and the Service – I know you folks can ace it! Liz xx – Lisa Moore, Senior Admin, Compass Birmingham MHST

Conscientious

Lizzie (Gill) has worked conscientiously to develop an Allocation Tracker which has been instrumental in organising referrals & capacity. What started out as a request from Team Leader, Hannah Carr, for ‘bi-folds’ on a spreadsheet turned into a beautiful work of Excel-art! The West Lancashire team began piloting the tracker in January 2024 and it’s been incredibly useful at informing the school-link meeting – allocation process. it’s now been rolled out across the rest of the teams in Lancashire.

Lizzie has been awarded the Everyday Hero Award from Service Manager, Anne Haines, for her creative & solution focussed response to the task 😊” – Hannah Carr, Team Leader Central & West Lancs MHST

Gratitude

I’d like to express gratitude to those involved thus far in the prep work for the Iaptus implementation work for Compass Be, Compass Bloom, Compass Shine, Compass GO …, Compass Phoenix and Compass Wakefield. Huge thanks to Lisa Gale for her drive and warm and extremely supportive input ahead of her departure from Compass. You will be missed, Lisa. Thanks also to Arjan Bains, Ian Collyer, Sarah Walton, Vic Hanley and Zoe Davis, otherwise known as the A Team… This is a significant and very important piece of work for Compass which will see us move to a system that enables more synchronisation of our mental health and emotional wellbeing data than ever before. So, very exciting indeed. The project ‘proper’ has yet to kick off (in April), but we are busily on with laying the foundations right now… We will share regular updates on the project after it kicks off. Watch this space 😊 – Johanne Parker, Head of Data Insights & Intelligence

Will miss you

A huge thank you, and good luck to Ranj who is moving to Birmingham MHST from April.  Thank you for all your hard, we will miss working with you but are really excited for your next steps with the Birmingham team!  Wishing you all the best, from all of us in the Noel Baker & Bemrose Team and here at Compass Changing Lives x’ – Michelle Allen, Team Leader, Compass Changing Lives MMHST

Welcoming

Thankyou to all that have helped me get settled into my new role, you have all been very friendly and welcoming. Sarah – Sarah Walton, PA to SOM

Support

I would like to say a big thank you to Ruth Mills for the support she has offered our new trainee EMHP in Chorley, Donna. Ruth has arranged shadowing opportunities, supported Donna to complete assessments and is continuing to offer opportunities to aid Donna’s development. Indecent imagery in referral – what to do

This month’s safeguarding feature has a focus on responding to actual or suspected indecent imagery following a recent case when one of our Compass services received potentially indecent images in the context of a referral.

Compass Policy includes guidance on how staff should respond to any actual or suspected indecent imagery but it is not something which arises often in our services so this is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the approach that should be taken.

For the full protocol please go to Appendix 16 of the Compass safeguarding policy which can be found here: P:\Operations\Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk Policy Procedures last update 23 01 24.pdf

In summary,

If you are in receipt or are aware of clients holding indecent images, you should not view them in any circumstances.  Doing so may make you liable to criminal prosecution.

  • Do not be tempted to open the image or forward it on to any other colleague.
  • Isolate the image in some way for electronic images move the file to a separate file within your system and notify the SIRO (Director of Finance and Corporate Services) of the facts.
  • For a physical image place the document in a sealed envelope and store securely.
  • Report your suspicions to Compass Designated Safeguarding Officer.
  • Do not delete the image.
  • Do not search for other material.
  • Raise a safeguarding incident on Datix

If you would like to know more about Compass Safeguarding practices or you would like to suggest a focus for the Safeguarding feature in Compass Points which will help your colleagues gain a greater insight into safeguarding practices, please let me know – jan.smith@compass-uk.org

Quality Assurance with Sue Cody

Team’s high quality visit from board members and and senior staff

Board members and senior staff at Compass visited a school and met commissioners and staff at Compass GO!.

Claire Wood, Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Clinical Governance Group (CGG), Len Pendle, Non-Executive Director and member of the Clinical Governance Group (CGG) and Sue Cody, Quality Assurance Lead, visited Compass Go for the day, on 6th March.

Laura Lockett Service Manager, said: ““The Compass Go… team were excited to have a visit from the Compass NEDs, and we planned a day in which the NEDs could speak openly and at pace with the team, as well as external stakeholders that we work collaboratively with.

“The highlight of the day was their visit to a local primary school in which they took part in a healthy relationships Pod with pupils and observed how we offer intervention support via groups.

“The Go… team reported feeling listened to, cared about and that the NEDs were ‘genuine’. For all other Compass services, it is definitely worth having the NEDs visit!”

The day included a visit to a school healthy relationships session, lunch with staff and commissioner, meet and greet with staff and sharing the work of the Resilience project and JEFF project.

Claire said: “Our NED visit to Compass Go was an eye-opener for Len and me! The visit was welcoming. well-organised and informative.

“The Team shared their challenges and successes in a very open way, and I was particularly impressed by the breadth of professional backgrounds within the team, which bring extensive experience and wisdom to the services.

“It was a delight to meet the enthusiastic Commissioning Team over lunch and a joy to sit in on the POD facilitated by Harry at Scartho Junior Academy.

And Claire added: “Well done Compass Go! You are clearly improving the lives of young people in NE Lincolnshire.”

Non-Executive Director (NED) site visits with the Quality Assurance Lead are one of the ways Compass will continue to connect with colleagues from across the organisation in quality improvement and the development of effective services, this will provide opportunities for staff to share openly their experiences of working in Compass.

The outcomes of the visit will be shared with the Clinical Governance Group, and the Compass Senior Leadership Team and Board. Any areas identified for action will be discussed at Clinical Governance Group and with the Board.

And Sue added: “The service visits will be scheduled to be held twice a year on a rolling basis, it will be our aim to visit all services over the coming years, thank you so much for hosting the day Compass Go.”

Audit Guidance and Plan 2024-2025

Audit is a way to find out if care is being provided in line with Compass standards and allows the services, directorates, organisation, children, young people and families and stakeholders to assess if we are doing what we should be doing is reaching Compass standards and identifies where improvements can be made. This evidence can support our commitment within Compass to maintain the highest quality of care to children, young people and families.

The Compass Audit Guidance and Plan 2024-2025, has been collaboratively developed with staff representatives within the Clinical Working Groups (CWGs), with the aim to support a consistent approach to auditing with a common understanding, albeit embedding bespoke audits for the directorates as per requirements.

Supervision Policy Updated

Compass is committed to ensuring access for all staff and volunteers to good quality supervision. This underpins safe and effective care for children, young people and families, supporting staff development, skills, abilities and knowledge. It creates the opportunity for high-level reflection, exploration, support and respectful challenge which are crucial to ensuring staff learning and developing professionally.

The Supervision Policy has been reviewed, updated and recently published and shared with all Service Managers. The policy aims to reflect the changes within the MHST’s in regards to case management supervision, external supervision and supervision of supervision, a supervision toolkit, which includes updated supervision templates for directorates, as well as an embedded ‘Good Guide to Supervision’.

This piece of work was supported by members of the Clinical Working Groups, to ensure that all aspects of supervision for the directorates were captured, alongside feedback from individual staff over the last year.

Vicky Triffitt, Team Leader for Compass Go, helped develop the MHST templates, alongside clinical leads from the Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing services, to ensure that they captured all aspects of supervision within this, these templates have been trialled in Compass Go with excellent feedback.

Please can you make sure that you continue to upload your supervision documentation to My Compass, alongside completing the supervision trackers.

The Supervision Policy can be accessed in P:\Operations.

Senior Leadership Team Update

As part of a planned schedule of work, SLT reviewed and ratified two key documents at our March meeting – Compass’ financial procedures and volunteering framework.

Our financial procedures have been updated by Olakunle Dare to reflect the changes in organisational size, scope and infrastructure and sets out people’s financial responsibilities under a scheme of delegated authority, budgetary control and monitoring, the management of income including tenders and contracts, the management of expenditure, people related expenditure including eligible expenses and record keeping. The procedures will be shared with managers and staff shortly.

On behalf of the work undertaken by the volunteering steering group, Rachel presented the new volunteering framework – branded as Compass Together. The framework is a culmination of the steering group’s work over the last 12 months in developing a volunteering arm aligned to our mission, vision, and values, and incorporates learning from our pilot site in Barnsley. It includes our purpose, principles, a volunteer charter, non paid role policy, volunteer agreement and induction, and supporting documents (e.g. approved volunteer job roles, quick guide to recruiting volunteers, enquiry form, useful tools such as posters, QR codes etc.).

Compass Together will be launched in April, with services onboarding as and when they are ready to. Following discussions with service managers, a phased roll out is underway. The volunteering steering group will now shift its focus to supporting services with implementation as well as determining some volunteering metrics that will help us to measure impact.
