Compass Together is about staff working alongside our volunteers

Compass Together volunteer with us

Published on: April 22, 2024

Our Compass charity is launching Compass Together, our renewed approach to developing and supporting communities, using the combined experience and knowledge of volunteers working with staff.

There are new volunteering pages on our website, with a link for people to enquire, making it easy to sign up. And we have new resources and tools to encourage volunteering, including posters for the office and social media slides.

Rachel Bundock, Compass CEO, said the volunteer roles were aimed at enriching Compass’ offer to children, young people and families. They provide a variety of workplace opportunities and enhance experiences for paid staff.

Compass Together is launching with three quite wide-ranging volunteer roles that are already on Eploy, our recruitment portal.

Rachel said: “Compass Together is about bringing together both our paid staff and volunteers to work as one team.

“Volunteers work shoulder to shoulder, side by side with paid members of staff because we recognise the real value and importance that volunteers have on the work that we’re trying to do, because, in essence, together we are trying to achieve a shared, common goal.

“People will have a real diversity of professional experience and knowledge for the admin support role, and those skills are important for us.

“But also, volunteers live within their community. They have a really rich understanding of lives in that community and what the everyday issues are that the communities face.”

She said: “Having volunteers able to bring those insights helps us to bridge that gap and make sure that what we do actually is really bespoke to that local community.

“People really understand that what makes Compass so special is the values that we hold dear, and that’s ultimately about how we treat people and how we care for people. And I think that really resonates for all of our staff in all of our teams, in our service and our central teams.

And Rachel added: “Fundamentally, people know that it’s a people organisation and they are working with a group of people that are trying to achieve the same mission.”

Compass Together approach

With our stated Values and Mission in mind, we work for Compass, together.

Our volunteering aims

Compass Together aims to:

  • Engage with school-aged children, young people, young adults, parents / carers, families, and local communities.
  • Be inclusive and representative of the communities and people we serve, including those who can contribute expertise by experience.
  • Increase opportunities for people living in the communities we serve to build the skills and confidence for self-help and helping others.
  • Invest time and support to volunteers in gaining valuable life and work skills.
  • Learn from, and participate in volunteer networks and partnerships to deliver real added value from our volunteering roles.
  • Be creative and bold in the ongoing development of our volunteering opportunities, technical expertise and knowledge.
