It is normal to feel sad if something bad happens. Sometimes sad feelings go away quickly, like if you feel sad after an argument with a friend, but then make up the next day.
Sometimes the sad feelings last for a longer time, like feeling sad after someone dies. If you have been feeling sad for a long time, or the sad feelings are really strong, it is important to tell your parents/carers or a trusted grown up how you feel.
You will not be in trouble for feeling sad. Your parents/carers, teacher or trusted grown up may be able to help you feel better and that why it’s important to tell them, so that they can get you the support you need.
Things that might help when you are feeling sad are:
- Talking with a trusted grown up who can help get some of the sad feelings and thoughts out of your head
- Sometimes it can help to write a letter to the sad part of you. Think about what you would like a good friend or person to write?
- When we feel sad about a person leaving or dying we can make a box of all the good memories
- Find a distraction by doing something that makes you happy
