Roger Alcott, age 62
Worked for many years for HJ Heinz; was responsible for a factory in north west London employing some 2000 plus people before becoming Project Head, implementing TQM both in the UK and USA. After leaving Heinz he became a self employment management consultant, working both abroad and in the UK. During this time also worked on a voluntary capacity for a number of organisations. Obtained a BSc in Social Science through Open University three years ago and is now studying for a Masters. Became a JP in 2003. Lives with his wife in Easingwold.
Alan Maynard, BA, B.Phil, Hon DSc, age 57
Appointed Chairman of York Hospitals NHS Trust in December 1997 after being involved in the management of the local NHS since 1983. Professor of Economics and founding Director of Centre for Health Economics at the University of York (1983-95). Now Professor of Health Economics at the local university. Member of the Independent Inquiry into the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act and involved in research and consultancy nationally and internationally (e.g. Department for International Development, World Bank and the World Health Organisation). Lives in Heworth, York.
John Staples, age 65
Retired from HM Prison Service five years ago after 32 years as a Prison Governor. Links with the criminal justice system through membership of the Parole Board of England and Wales and mentoring of a number of serving prison governors. Serves as a member of the Sentencing Advisory Panel to the Home Secretary and Court of Appeal and is also a Trustee of the Howard League for Penal Reform. Has advised on penal reform in Yemen, Nepal and Kazakhstan while serving as an Associate of the International Centre for Penal Studies at Kings College, London. Has served on the Council of Compass for five years. Lives with his wife in York.
Michael Morgan, BSc, FCIPD, age 64
Michael retired from Northern Foods PLC in 2000 after 33 years in various roles, the last 16 on the main board. In 2001, Michael began a second career as a Coach, working with Senior Executives in the Private and Public sectors with Praesta Partners LLP. Michael has many years experience in the NHS as a Non Executive Director including Vice Chairman of Northern and Yorkshire Regional Health Authority. Michael is a member of the Chief Medical Officer’s Panel on Patient Safety 2006 and a member of the Sentencing Advisory Panel since 2001.
David Martin, BA DipAppPsych PhD, age 63
Originally a clinical psychologist, then worked for several years in local authority social services departments: Assistant Director in North Yorkshire and Deputy Director of Social Services in West Glamorgan. Appointed Chief Executive of Bradford Family Health Services Authority in 1989, then held Board posts in two Regional Health Authorities. Left the NHS in 1996 to work at the School of Health and Related Research at Sheffield University where he began a long and continuing series of development projects for the Department of Health, mainly concerned with general practice but latterly with the management of controlled drugs in community settings. Now a Senior Associate at the Health Services Management Centre at Birmingham University and manages a consultancy providing organisational, personal and policy development advice to a wide range of organisations within and outside the NHS. Compass was a client for four years.
Sue Bos, age 59
Graduated from the University of York and trained as a General Manager within the NHS. NHS posts in Leeds, York, Mansfield and Ipswich followed by 12 years as Director of Specialist Mental Health Services at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust with responsibility for a group of clinical directorates including specialist psychotherapies, eating disorders, forensic psychiatry, drug and alcohol services and child and adolescent services. Member of the Trust’s Senior Management Team and involved in negotiations with Commissioners. Encouraged clinical staff to take managerial responsibility for their services including all aspects of clinical governance and patient safety. Has delivered training in Root Cause Analysis for the National Patient Safety Agency and currently works for the Health Service Ombudsman on complaints about the NHS and for Verita on homicide and disciplinary investigations. Lives in York.
