"Meeting the challenge of delivering continuous and progressive care to problem drug users"

Developing Compass

Compass aims to provide a comprehensive, accessible and flexible response to the health, social and legal problems faced by drug users and this is reflected both in the range of services that we offer and in our development of new areas of work. Since our inception in 1986, we have been developing new services on a continuous basis. The growth of Compass has followed two distinct paths:

Throughout our history, we have demonstrated a forward thinking approach to service provision, pioneering work with drug using offenders and developing the concept of continuous care by establishing points of access and progressive programmes of intervention that cross criminal justice, health and social care boundaries.

This has been a matter of establishing good service coverage with a large range of interventions, supported by inter-agency protocols on access, assessment and joint service delivery.

Compass service development is most often signalled by changes in social policy, in response to local, regional and national strategies on drug misuse and most importantly, in response to the changing needs of the people who use our services. The Compass process of clinical review ensures that our services maintain their relevance to service user need, are effective and can make a significant contribution to commissioning strategy.

Compass is shaped for further growth as the UK's drug treatment sector expands and we are committed to improving our services and seeking new markets in which to deliver them. Our strategy for growth is supported by a number of important criteria that are central to sustainable and high quality service provision:

Our primary objective in growing Compass is to improve the coverage of our services to meet the challenge of delivering continuous and progressive care to problem drug users.
