Compass Hits The Boards
The new play ‘Pub Quiz is Life’ is a dark drama which explores the issues of drug use and deprivation – and one of its characters draws on the knowledge and experience of staff and service users in Hull.
Playwright Richard Bean approached Compass Hull in May for advice on substance misuse and its effect on communities in order to create a character for the play. Service Manager Peta Godney and Assistant Area Director Norma Howarth helped Richard to construct the background to the character who was to become Baz in the final production.
The play deliberately challenges perceptions of drug use and explores the social and political issues. Bean’s writing steers away from the often stereotypical portrayal of substance misuse and does not disguise the reality of addiction and deprivation.
